Joe Salato
Wing Wavers
Joe Salato, the inventor and CEO of Wing Wavers decoys, remembers the first hunt he shared with his dad, Lou Salato. He was five and sitting in a duck blind on the shores of northern Germany, where his father was stationed. He watched his dad knock down a few teal. Minutes later, his dad came back to the blind with a crippled duck and handed it to Joe before he returned to retrieve the rest of the bounty. Lou told him to hold on to it and not let go. Several minutes later his dad returned and was amazed to see the earnest five-year-old sitting in chest high water, holding the duck above the incoming tide. “I guess you could say, come hell or high water, I was hooked,” Joe fondly remembers.
Joe spent most of his childhood in the Finger Lakes area of upstate New York and hunted waterfowl in the Atlantic Flyway. In 1984, Joe moved to Minnesota, where he grew to love the abundant wildlife and picturesque Midwestern wilderness. Joe has hunted much of the Midwest and Northeast. He has hunted snow geese in South Dakota with former Vikings head coach, Bud Grant. However, each fall you can regularly find him in Hastings, MN on the Mississippi river, where his unique calling skills have made him a notable figure.
Joe has been photographed by Ducks Unlimited photographer, Bill Buckley for the pictorial, The Waterfowler's World. He has also written an analysis of the impact of robotized decoys on the waterfowl population, which has been reviewed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. A frequent guest on sports radio, Joe is often asked to speak at waterfowl events across the country. Joe also conducts seminars on duck and goose hunting at outdoor shows across the country.
He’s come a long way from that ocean shore in Germany. However, one thing remains the same….”Come hell or high water”, he’s still hooked on waterfowling.
